Glover—Dixon House
118 S. Washington
1892,  Queen Anne style

The house is a fine example of the exurberant Queen Anne Style In wood frame construction, with a riotous composition of architectural forms, materials, textures and classical embellishments. A foundation of field stone gives way to horizontal, bevelled siding on first floor exterior walls, which in turn yields to wood shingle cladding on second floor walls, all crowned by slate shingles on third floor gables and roofs. Corner tower, projecting oriel, pocketed gable window, hooded balcony with swagged ballustrade, roof and porch cornices embellished with modillions and garlands in bas—relief, and asymmetrical double hung windows with smaller top sash in leaded art glass — all contribute to an exuberant display of architectonics. The interior equals the dazzle of the exterior. The original ten rooms on the first and second floors, each finished with different woods, were crafted by carpenters Imported from Europe. Original, hand rubbed oil finishes may still be admired, and some hand carving is so delicate that It was secured with steel needles in lieu of nails or screws. The first floor front hail and a rear south room are trinuned in oak; the living room, now divided into two offices, is in birdseye maple; an adjacent parlor, also used as an office, is in niahoghany. The former dining room, now a waiting room, is finished in birch and the kitchen and pantry in ash. Rooms on the second floor are individually finished in ash, sycamore, wild—grain yellow pine; bathrooms on both floors are finished in cherry.  Five marble fireplaces still adorn the house. Original chandeliers were rewired and reused in first floor rooms. Most floors on the main level are parquet, in a variety of woods and rich geometric patterns. The ceiling in the dining room is the original fresco plaster, and hall walls are the original gesso plaster work. The small parlor still has its original imitation leather wall paper.
