Follett House
Hotel
17 E. Cross
1859, Italianate
The Follett House was considered
one of the finest hotels on the Michigan Central Railway in the third quarter
of the last century. It remained the center of many community social and
theatrical events into the 1880s. Rumor has it that the first basketball
game in Michigan was played in its ballroom. The facade reveals at least
two phases of construction, unmatched but similar. For several years it
has been undergoing rehabilitation and restoration by its current group
of five owners, three of whom live on upper floors. Its present cornice
is a 1986 interpretation of the original, which had been removed in the
1960s.
