Dunham House
410 N. Huron
1865, Gothic Revival

The Dunham House is a fine example of the Carpenter Gothic variant of the Gothic Revival style, in wood frame construction with horizontal siding and steeply pitched gable roofs and dortners. The style is identified by intricately crafted, scroll saw detailing of its gable fascia vergeboards. That detail is, however, found only here in the north and south gables, but may have once existed in the front gable as well. Gothic arched windows and door open to a second story balcony. It was built for Dr. George Dunham, a dentist, for his office and family residence. More modest in form and detail than masonry versions, the wooden Carpenter Gothic was a favorite style of the middle class. It was restored by John and Jane Van Bolt in the mid—197Os, who added the picket fence and garage in 1982 and 1984.
